This match was the first heavyweight match of the tournament and what a thrill fest it was. The match promised us goals and it did deliver; little did we know that the score line would be so lopsided. Holland beat Spain convincingly and scored 5 goals past the reigning World Champions. Spain took the lead initially but the Dutch responded in style. The match ended 5-1 in favor of the Dutch. The Dutch truly paid its debt and then some.

No one really expected Columbia to perform the way they did in the World Cup. The loss of star striker, Radamel Falcao, to injury before the World Cup were in everyone’s minds, but Columbia  proved that they were more than a one man team. A gem was discovered in James Rodriguez, and he scored 6 goals to drag Columbia till the Quarter finals. Their World Cup came to an end with a defeat to Brazil. Although they lost the match 2-1, they managed to win a lot of hearts that day.

4. Costa Rica

Costa Rica was one of the surprise packages of the tournament. They were in the Group of death along with England, Italy, and Uruguay. They didn’t scrape through to the knock out stages; they topped the group of death. Little known players such as Joel Campbell, Keylor Navas and Yeltsin Tejeda became household stars overnight. Thanks to a penalty shoot-out, they were ousted from the tournament in the Quarter finals against the strong Dutch.

5. Luis Suarez Bites The Dust Again

Luis Suarez took center stage again at the biggest footballing event. The man trumped his handball incident in the previous World Cup with a tenacious bite in this recent World Cup. The victim this time was Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini. It was even more ludicrous when the man made attempts to explain his behavior and prove his innocence. A shocker nevertheless!

6. Algeria

Most of you wouldn’t disagree with this one. Algeria showed determination and hunger like no one else. There were in a group which had Asian powerhouse South Korea and the strong Russians. They managed to qualify from the group stages in flying colors. They lost to the eventual winners, Germany, in the second round, but not before keeping them at bay till 90 minutes. Although they did score in extra time, they were ousted from the tournament with goals coming from Andre Schurrle and Mesut Ozil.

7. Portugal Vs Germany

This match was certainly a shocker and a tad bit disappointing. It didn’t turn out the way we hoped it would. Pepe’s stupid red card offense set the tone for Germany to demolish Portugal. Portugal lost the match 4-0 and the heavy defeat came back to haunt them later. They were later eliminated on goal difference.
