10 Highest Grossing Movies In 2013

Hunger Games tops the list of 10 highest grossing movies in 2013. What is surprising is Frozen an animated cartoon by Disney takes the no.3 spot...

1. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire 

The Hunger Games comes in at the top spot. This movie featuring Actress Jennifer Lawrence continues the story one year after the 74th hunger games. After Lawrence's character Katniss becomes a national symbol for rebellion against the Capital, she and co-star Josh Hutcheson, (Peeta), are thrust into another hunger game. This time the game is a little different. The movie grossed $158,074,286 at the Box Office at its opening across over 4,000 theaters nationwide on 11/22. At the end of 2013 the Lionsgate Film grossed over $423,000,000, which makes for one great pay day. 

2. Iron Man 3

Coming in at number two is Iron Man 3 starring actor Robert Downey Jr. The film made a record $174,144,585 on opening night. The movie was released in 4,253 theaters across the nation and grossed $409,013,944 by the end of 2013. The movie was nominated for Several Teen Choice Awards, in which two were won. The movie is also up for an Academy Award in 2014.

3. Frozen

Frozen takes our number three spot this year. The film is an animated feature film in which the young Anna takes off in an adventure to find her sister Elsa. This movie, made on a budget of $150,000,000, made $67,391,326 on its worldwide opening weekend, and grossed $388,756,783 by the end of 2013. While the numbers it produced in the United States are impressive, the film reportedly made over $611,000,000 in the foreign market. 

4. Despicable Me 2

Our favorite, lovable, supervillain is topping out list this year. Gru and his gang of adoptive youngsters made a splash at the box office. The two time, Oscar nominated film opened in 4,003 theaters on July 3rd, 2013. The film grossed $368,061,265 nationwide at the end of its run at the Box Office.

5. Man of Steel

Man of Steel came in at number five. The featured role, played by Henry Cavil, earned this Superman remake $116,619,362 on opening weekend. The film grossed $291,045,518 nationally, and $377,000,000 in the foreign market. Cavill’s featured role not only made this movie a top 5 hit, but earned the film a Teen Choice Award.

6. Gravity 

Gravity came in sixth place. This Sci-Fi Thriller featured convened actor George Clooney and Actress Sandra Bullock. When an ordinary spacewalk turns into a major disaster, leaving bullock and Clooney’s characters tied together in space, it can turn into millions. The film grossed over $270,000,000 nationwide, ranking number one in over 3,000 theaters. The film was nominated for ten Oscars, taking home the gold with 7 wins. 

7. Monsters University 

Our favorite scares’ join us on this year’s list. Sullivan and Mike take us on a journey through their college years at Monsters University. The animated film hit theaters June 21st, 2013 and saw $82,429,469 in sales during opening weekend. The film made $743,559,607 worldwide, before closing out its run at the box office. 

8. The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug 

The Hobbit came in at number eight. The film grossed $256,961,185 nationally. 

9. Fast and Furious 6 

The Fast and Furious franchise made our list this year, as actors Paul Walker, Ludacris, The Rock, and Tyrese Gibson gave stellar performances. The film grossed $97,375,245 at the box office opening weekend, and $238,679,850 at the end of its run. Unfortunately one of the franchises main actors Paul Walker was involved in a tragic accident and lost his life. It has yet to be determined if the franchise will continue in his absence. 

10. Oz The Great and Powerful 

Oz The Great and Powerful came in at number 10. This rendition of the Wizard of Oz made $234,911,825 at the end of its Box Office run.
